Can anyone explain why when you transfer footage from the camera to a computer it gets transferred as a folder labled, "AVCHD," inside of which are two folders: "AVCHDTN and BDMV". And then you have to click on the BDMV folder to actually get to the thing that actually shows video---"STREAM." Why all these extra folders and such, if the "STREAM" is the only thing that actually has the video you shot? Is it necessary to save all of this stuff (the entire AVCHD folder) in your storage/archive? Thanks.

Yes and no. You don't "need" to save the data. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. There is meta data that may be useful for some applications. As I understand it, the whole file structure is defined by the BluRay Standard.

the importing process in some NLEs requires the folder structure. In Vegas you can just drop the .mts files on the timeline and start editing. But in Final Cut, you have to log and transfer- and if you don't have the folders correct, it won't "see" your footage.

Also the other folders can contain metadata and still images if your camera supports it, and yes, it's the same folder structure as a blu-ray disc.
