AVCHD vs XAVC

Anyone have a grasp of what the real world difference between AVCHD 24Mbps and XAVC(S) 50Mbps are? Are they significant?

I have only ever shot stuff with AVCHD and from looking at screen shots and test films online, it's seems not really worth it to get an external recorder to record ProRes unless you go with something like the 7Q that can convert it to 10bit.

So is XAVC 50 something really worthwhile over AVCHD 24 at the end of the day?

I think there's a huge different between AVCHD and XDCAM and given the vast amount of options in XAVC I would expect a very significant difference. AVCHD robs the image out of the finer details which even XDCAM does not. Looking on a streamed video might not reveal to much but looking at the source material would.

Hmmm, not sure what XDCAM has to do with the codec?
I'm mostly thinking of XAVC at 50Mbps 8bit, not any other flavour.
(AKA, I'm thinking of getting a A7s and curious what the XAVC-S will bring)

For me, i don't really see the codec spec to judge what a camera can do. Just like fs700 avchd codec and with other sony camera with avchd, they having BIG gap. I think most of it just marketing strategy, like 4k can do in a handphone camera, erm....Still need depend how is the camera reading the sensor, can it fully function all those technical thingy. I will see more real result rather then see spec, on paper talking now, regret before. I think reading full pixels from sensor or not is the MAIN for giving you the quality of a image from what i seen.

I don't think you'll notice the difference between bit rates in the picture. At the end of the day 4:2:0 8 bit is kind of a limiting factor.

That being said, XAVC is much better than the clunky AVCHD... AVCHD wasn't great.... I don't like it... Just my opinion.

I think the Canon C300 is an excellent example of going beyond the specs. I know it is a different codec...but it is 8bit 50mbs. I anticipate the XAVC being similar based on the footage I have seen, not that I have worked with it. But the C300 footage can be pushed around way more than the AVCHD coming out of the FS700 internally.

The FS700 with the 7q and 10bit....yeah, that obviously takes it to another level. I think the A7s is gonna be like a little C300 with more frame rates and insane low light ability. I plan to get one down the road as a B cam and stealth cam to accompany my FS700. By the point....I am hoping the 7q will work for the A7s 4K ability too for when I want to take advantage of it. But I see using the XAVC often.
