AVCHD Viewing software and post workflow

Morning guys.

I'm looking for the avccam viewer for PC and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I've looked here:

https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/desk/e/download.htm#avchd

but can't see it. On the US Panasonic site, only the mac version is mentioned.

http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/avchd-home.asp

Am I missing something obvious?

The second thing I was thinking about is my import workflow. I am an Avid editor and at the moment, importing AVCHD clips, loses timecode. Does anyone have a way around this? I was wondering whether transcoding to P2 first would be a better workflow. Would that retain timecode?

Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

regards

Rich

Transcode to AVID DNxHD will maintain TC

I wouldnt bother with the Avccam Viewer. I see others using VLC on AVID systems for viewing avccam footage

Thanks Shooter. Do you have a particular software you use to transcode to DNxHD? I used to use Procoder, but it doesn't seem to detect the pcm audio in the avchd streams.

One of the main reasons I bought a Nanoflash was seeing the transcode time in Avid to go from AVC to Dnx - over 3:1 in my observation. That's not a usable work flow for me. Nor was I too happy with what I saw of the AVC Codec further downstream in additional encoding to get the product to delivery format.
To the question of viewing, I had a demo copy of Premiere on my Avid MC system for a short time, and found that it would actually let me see and play, at reduced res, the AVC files direct out of the SD card. And if I'm not mistaken, Avid MC 5.5 is supposed to offer AVCHD support - though I suspect you'd need quite a lot of processing power for it.

I only transcode when working between post houses. I can edit avccam natively RT in CS5 PPRO.

For transcoding...I use Adobe Media Encoder.

I am not sure that a trial version of Premiere is any use to you because Adobe do not licence the codec in trial version.

Avid does support AVCHD, but it transcodes it first, which obviously takes time and most importantly, it strips the timecode.

So am I right in assuming Panasonic no longer support avccam viewer for the pc?

Is there anyone here who works with both the AF100/101 and Avid? I'm curious to hear the least convoluted workflows.

I have been using Clipwrap to convert the .mts files to DNxHD files. It also will join clips that are over 25 minutes long. It still takes time but is the best solution I have found for bringing in clips longer than 25 minutes in length. Shorter clips I have brought in straight from the SD card without using Clipwrap. I have not found the timecode to be stripped.

I didn't notice that Avid stripped away the timecode the few times I did the transcode. I'm not saying it didn't, but I don't THINK it did. And I was mistaken earlier, when I thought I'd read that Avid MC 5.5 added AVCHD native support. It does not. It adds AVC Intra acceleration.

That's rather odd! Did your clips have pcm audio? I'm wondering if that could make a difference.

Sounds great D10S... But I'm a PC man and Clipwrap appears to be Mac only! Bah!

You would be a candidate for Adobe CS5.

Wonder if you could try and buy Adobe CS4 ( cheaper than latest CS5) CS4 has the Adobe Media Encoder as a standalone app.

It works stand alone in CS5 (64 bit) but you would need to buy the entire package.

can i use Adobe Encoder to convert AVCHD to DNxHD? it doesn't seem to support it.

I downloaded the free player from Panasonic because playing a pan clip with VLC-player, the vertical lines break up.
The Panasonic player is no improvement.
Playing back the same clip with the camera is smooth and gives no problems with the vertical lines at all.
All other clips are playing ok, only panned clips have this phenomenon.
Any body know why this is happening? Don't tell me I have to convert to xxx.
My computer in running Win7 ultimate 64bits, quad core intel 3.2ghz, 8gb ram, WD 10k harddisk raid0 and with two ATI-cards in crossfire configuration.
