AVCHD + Slow Machine = Help Needed

I have the HMC 150.
I have a macbook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo) 2.66 GHz
I Edit with Adobe Premiere Pro CS4

Obviously the footage is a strain on my system. Its very slow & choppy when scrubbing & Editing.
I can't change anything right now. What I have is what I have for at least a couple months (and I have some projects that are shot and need to be edited).

I have been editing the AVCHD footage directly. I have heard about converting it to DVC Pro HD and edit that footage. Any thoughts on that method? Will it help? Are there any free converters?

Any other advice (other than upgrade to a Quad Core +)?

Transcode into something more processor friendly. ie. DVCPRO HD codec or up res to avid DNxHD or Canopus etc.
