AVCHD - Pros Res 50FPS encoding issue

Hi all,

For some reason I seem to loose my 50FPS when encoding to Pro Res inside MPEG Streamclip, even when I set 50FPS as the frame rate in the encode options screen.
It's odd, it seems to create a 50FPS file, but when you get it on the timeline (FCP Studio 3), there are two duplicated frames, i.e 25 frames doubled up.

When I get the MTS file on the timeline (which says it's a 25FPS file!) it gives me my full 50 frames that I recorded, which I can then slow down at 50% to get some nice slo mo.

I'm just wondering how I can encode to Pro Res and still get my 50 frames.

Has anyone encountered this issue?

Thanks,
Jack

I think what the problem is, is that FCP will work with 24P, 30P and 60i, but not 60P.
Now this is the US version of the NEX FS-100 that I have so I assume the PAL equivalents
are that FCP will work with 25p, 30P or 50i. When I shoot in 60P and want to use it
in FCP, I just use Cinema Tools and 'Conform' the files to 24P. Then I drop it in a 24P
sequence. Nice, smooth 2.5 slow motion. Then if I set the speed at 250%, it is normal
speed.....I can 'ramp' the speeds and everything. Plus, the added bonus of when it is played
at 250%, you get great audio. I end up shooting lots of things in 60P when I think I might
want audio later, and it gives me flexibility to either go slo mo, or normal speed, or
ramp between them. But it does involve the extra step of using Cinema Tools. On the plus
side, the 'conform' process is REALLY quick. Takes about 10 seconds to conform an hours
worth of video clips, but you do have to keep track of everything, original MTS files,
converted to Pro Res version, and 'conformed' version. But it works nicely.
So for you, my 'guess' is that you would want to 'conform' your 50P file to 25p, and
then either use it at 25P for nice 1/2 speed slo motion stuff, or speed it up 200% for
normal speed.

FCP7 will actually work with 1080p60. There are just no native timeline settings, so you have to set your playback to be like half quality. When you put it in a new timeline and then select to change the timeline to match the clip settings, it will make it a 1080p60 sequence. The render bar will just come up with an orange color and it wont play back smoothly. Plus if you add any filters or effects, they always have to be rendered.
EHeath on here works with native 1080p60 footage quite often in FCP7.

Jack, your problem is probably inside of MPEG Streamclip. Check your Prores settings when your exporting it. I know it has an option somewhere for 1080p60. Or maybe its just native resolution and frame rate. I cant remember which one, since I dont go from MTS to Prores or DNxHD in Streamclip and do not have the program in front of me at the moment. Try out clipwrap. Its one of the only programs out there that will transcode 1080p60 (or 50 in your case) to prores WITH audio.

I would do what AK Dude is saying though so you do not have to worry about the playback and rendering isues.
