Hi,

I shoot sports in 720p/60.

All settings in FCP are correct. After editing is complete, I export my work as a self-contained movie, which I bring into Compressor.

Here I use a Best Quality DVD setting with a few tweaks.

Bit Rate - CBR 7.5
Frame Controls - Off

I play back the DVDs on a 40 inch HDTV. For most people it looks great, but I notice lots of artifacting in the footage. The closer you get to the screen, the worst it looks. The players look like they have "ghost trails."

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Ghost trails? Is there any chance that's your TV showing ghosting? Especially if it's a little older it might be more prone to ghosting. What about looking at the DVD on your laptop?
 
You do realize that your DVD is only 29.97fps instead of 59.94? You can not author a DVD with more than 30fps. You might be aware of this, but just throwing it out there.

The footage looks much worse than the .mov file. The .mov file looks great, but then again I'm looking at it on my computer screen and not blown up on a 40inch TV.

The TV is new. Looks bad on laptop too.

Yup, I'm aware of that and I know that causes some minor quality issues, but I think it's something else. I have to do some tests and figure this out.

I'm using Compressor.

I've read various arguments about CBR vs. VBR. I always thought CBR is better because you can have a consistent bit rate throughout the whole piece, but I've read that VBR has 2-passes which make it better.

I usually have frame controls turned off for progressive footage, but maybe I should have them turned on..
