AVCHD 2.0 and the AG-AF100

Searched through the archive and havent seen this issue come up. Just wondering if anyone knows if our baby is going to get a firmware upgrade that supports AVCHD 2.0 and its tasty new 28Mbps.

Also, the info chart is confusing (would post it here but am using a fumbly android tablet). Are the luminosity samples really going to increase by a factor of 2? If so, Im curious to know how the AF100 spreads these samples over its gamma. Would love to know how 24p will fare in the mix.
This could be exciting.

According to a few people here, the AF100 isn't going to get ANY firmware upgrade that adds any functionality. Bug fixes only.

(A major drag, I know)

Highly doubtful. For the faster data rate I'd guess more than firmware update would be required and Panasonic generally does fixes more than feature updates in Firmware anyway. Look for it in the AF200 much more likely.

I hope not, because that would be a downgrade. The AF100 already does about 36Mbps when in 1080/60p mode.

The 28mbps of "AVCHD 2.0" is only used when in 1080/60p or when in 3D. It's not used for normal video.

After shooting for 6 months including the last project which was demanding as hell on the codec (overcrank, shooting high contrast directly into lights) I'm very happy with AVCHD. I haven't seen the codec break once and the colors are great.

+1 on that... Straight out of the camera is fine...
cancel my anticipated order for an external recorder (would be nice to be able to record to both SDI cards for backup though)

If the AF100 is already doing 35Mbps, why not make an extra option for 35Mbps CBR instead of fixed to 24Mbps VBR(10(?)-36)? Memory Chips aren't the issue!

Yeah, unfortunately Jan has said that they pretty much hard code functionality into the design of the camera from the beginning...so meaning if AVCHD 2 wasn't originally planned for, then its not going to happen. I guess the justification for this is that they want the camera to be rock solid in its planned functionality, which isn't a bad goal. But to those of us who like more functionality being added, its a bummer! haha
