AVC-Intra coming to 200/170?

Hi everyone,

I saw mentioned in another thread something about AVC-Intra in relation to these cameras. Is there a possibility of it showing up in the HVX200 and HPX170 come NAB?

Thanks!

Peter

No, they are not. If you want AVCIntra in an inexpensive camera, the HPX-300 is the one to get. The lens on this is better too.

AVC Intra would be a total waste on the 200/170, the cameras don't have the resolution to support the format to make much of a difference. In a way, it would be like recording an HV20 to an HDCAM SR deck. Could you do it? Yes. Would it make the picture look any better? No.

I don't think most 200/170 owners even know what AVC Intra is.

I mostly agree with Dan, except for the 10-bit part. The 200/170 wouldn't have the spatial resolution to take full advantage of the full-raster AVC-I codec. You'd still benefit from the 10-bit recording as the 200/170 actually do all internal processing at 19 bits, so it wouldn't be a complete waste, but ... yeah, the 200 & 170 were (IMO) engineered to take maximum advantage of the codec and all other engineering considerations. When going AVC-I they used the new chipset to take advantage of what the codec could record.

AVCINTRA would be cool, but I would love the option to shoot AVCHD onto the SD card slot of my 170.

It seems like the chips in the 170 could handle that? I know thats probably a mess for panny techs it would just be cool to have the option. The 150 looks really good and the long record times and low cost medium would make it a viable option for some projects that did not need all the P2 magic.

I seem to remember Jan mentioning at NAB that AVC-Intra was not something that could fit in that small of a form factor (yet). Which may be part of the reason why the HPX300 is a shoulder mount camera.
