AVC HD Footage

Hello all,

I just got an HMC150 and have started to test the workflow process and am wondering where/if it can be streamlined. I filled an 8gig card with 49 minutes and 46 seconds of footage shot at 720p 60.

Using Final Cut Pro 7 I logged and transferred the footage and got a 49.37GB clip.

The format is:
Apple ProRes 422, 1280 x 720, Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz

FPS: 59.94

Data Rate: 141.94 mbits/s

I understand that transcoding the AVC footage to Prores is going to result in large files, but 50 gb for less than an hour is crazy! Is this what I have to work with, or are people transcoding the Prores footage to something smaller that is still editable natively in FCP 7? If so what software/settings are you using to encode?

Thanks!

Final Cut Pro doesn't support native editing of AVCHD.

Many people transcode to pro res LT with good results.

AVCHD is a heavily compressed interframe long GOP computationally intensive codec and has a 4:2:0 color space.

Pro res is intraframe, 4:2:2 color space, and delight to edit with.

You can use Toast 9/10, ClipWrap2, etc. to transcode to DVCProHD footage if you wish, try AIC in L/T or other variants of pro res.

I prefer pro res, and HDD per gigabyte is pretty damn cheap.

Hi David,

Thanks for your response. I understand that Final Cut Pro doesn't support native editing. As I mentioned in my initial post I transcoded the footage to Apple Prores. Now I am wondering if people are editing footage in that state, or doing another transcode on it to get it to a smaller format to edit with.

Just trying to wrap my head around this new (to me) process!

Thanks!
