AVC-HD Editing on older, weaker computers

I use any of my machines. None are very fast, but that's ok with me. I don't have to tie up my editing machine with transcoding. I am hoping to order a new dual quad-core next week. And yes, DNxHD is just a codec.

Voltaic appears to be aimed at the FCE, iMovie, Windows Movie Maker crowd. I need professional tools.

Using multiple machines sounds like a great idea. I presume one could transcode on a PC (Vegas) and then bring the file over to Mac (FCP) without any problems?

That was one of my primary reasons for selecting this codec in particular. It's a quicktime file, and the codec is free for Mac's also, so just install the codec, and move the file over.

i need to get a good video card to work with avchd on vegas, the one that came in my computer isn't that great, what would you guys suggest in the $150 area?

Nothing, Vegas does not use the video card's GPU.

If you want to get a nice video card for other programs, or perhaps to help the preview feature on Vegas, then I would recommend an NVidia GeForce 9600GT/9800GT or similar. Those should fall quite close to your price range.

That's terrific - would you recommend a tutorial (including for use in PC and Mac)? Thank you for your help.

I just tried DNxHD using CS4 on a PC... the Avid file was noticeably lighter than the original AVCHD (but not badly so), and I had to manually render the timeline to get it to play without stuttering (I got a yellow bar)... but beyond that, it looked fine. Still think I'll go with Cineform ProspectHD v4 when it's finished... but this is definitely nice thing to have if I know I'll be handing off footage to an Avid editor (which I may be doing in a couple of weeks).
