similar to the last samurai a many more that talk about this theme..... but wow it matches perfectly...

...and Star Wars is a retelling of The Hidden Fortress and The Seven Samurai is basically The Magnificent Seven and Last Man Standing is a remake of Yojimbo and Outland is High Noon and Ran is King Lear and Throne of Blood is Macbeth and Equilibrium is Fahrenheit 451 plus 1984 plus Brave New World.

What's the point? Some works are derivative of others?

Imagine my surprise.

Well, now that this thread has been locked and unlocked, I'll pitch in.

I read an interview once with the late, great Ernest Lehman where he stated something akin to there are a limited amount of actual plots, openings, closings, plot points, etc. and the true writing was in characters, and the conflict between them and their given situation. In a sense, one could even argue that this element he spoke of is what made the film Memento as strong as it was, not the backwards told storyline.

And this is why I enjoyed Inglourious Basterds...the conflict between the characters was great!
