AV Club Nerds

Did I miss something? Every time I see AV club people represented on TV or in movies, they're always portrayed as super nerdy. Like the programmers I work with who tuck their polo shirts into their jeans and all have the same haircut.

We didn't have an AV club when I was back in school. I had to take photography instead. But head we an AV club it would have been filled with people who watched Evil Dead and listened to Nirvana and wore combat boots and actually had a chance with girls. Geeky but not nerdy.

Am I wrong?

In my own retail days, I found that people who were into the big ass car audio - hey, I got 12 amps, 16 drivers and 140 SPL! - were pretty cool. I've been to some high end audio presentations and they could be pretty weird. "I can't believe someone would spend a penny on this Krell amp!" (an amp that might have retailed for $25,000-$40,000). "Ooh, I would only listen to Mozart on a vinyl!" (crack, pop, hiss, crack, pop, hiss). "I only watch movies on a laser disc". (OK, here, they had a point)

The worst was this guy I worked with. He was living in the West Valley during the 6.8 Northridge earthquake. When his house began to shake, he rushed to save his big screen, not his daughter. The guy was a stepfather (the kid was his wife's and her ex's) and, aside of being scared, the girl ended up just fine but that's how he was.

He also had a mullet and a Supra Turbo. You know the type.

What's a 'polo shirt'? I think anyone that wore that type of clothing went to school on the other side of town, or to a private school...

I don't know that my highschool had an AV club... for me highschool was the nadir of my educational experience. The geometry teacher would give out a problem set then read the paper. Gym class was a horror to be avoided, along with any other athletic endeavor... except for distance running... one could go off campus, have a smoke, and run to get back in time... There were only 2 classes I enjoyed... Biology class, especially when I wired up a 9V battery to my finger, touched the frog we were disecting, had the frog spasm, and the girl who was my partner went into hysterics... the teacher slapped her in to quell the hysterics... and German, my only 'A' grade class in highschool...

The closest I came to any form of 'AV' club, was in order to fulfill some stupid requirement to graduate, I had to take a shop class, I made arrangements to take the adult school Television Repair class... and used that to make a few bucks by repairing neighbor's TVs... which really was mostly taking the tubes to the local 7/11 and using their tester, and buying replacements as needed.

This sounds like a Seinfeld episode they did about tucking - tuck or no-tuck?

By the way, polo shirts are always tucked in on the golf course so you can see that the white belt matches with the white shoes. Oh wait, those are golf shirts. Never mind.

Looks like polo players tuck:

That was the tucking of the hotel's sheets/blankets, and it's a very funny scene, lol.

A Larry Charles scripted episode (actually, the three in a row were by him, "The Keys", then "The Trip, Part I" and "The Trip, Part II). The Trip I & II aired right after the Olympics 1992).

PS. Back in the late'70's-early 80's, soccer shirts were often non-tucked and the shorts were very short too, which often resulted in a "pajama" look.
