This music video has been the most INTENSE location I have ever been on, and shot on. Nature was definitely having her way with us. Getting hit by gnarly sand bursts, standing and waiting around in blistering heat for 6 hours wearing nothing but shorts and a t shirt, and making a decent hike around the dunes as to not have other people interfere in our shots, etc. It was definitely a learning experience. Most of my gear was affected by the sand, and my glidecam hd2000 that i had brought out, got completely ruined and is no longer usable. The bearings are completely shot, and do not move whatsoever. You win some, you lose some. Or, I should have a planned a little bettter. That's all there is to it.

Nothing but natural light was used in this production. The wind definitely added more depth to the emotion and made for much more dynamic shots over all. I was able to shoot the entire 6 hours on just 1 gh4 battery, although I had spares just in case.

Let me know what you guys think! all critiques and comments welcome.

Stuff I loved: The color and DR of gh4 was great. Loved seeing the sky or was that a replacement? The villains costume was cool and unique. I liked the lock theme and that she was just unlocking herself. that was fun.

Stuff I didn't love: The story seemed too simple and or the song too long. I don't know what I would change here besides make the story more layered and add more interest to each shot. I think that losing your glidecam you really took an element out of the filmmaking that could've been really interesting. Maybe the chasing would have been a lot more enjoyable if it were smooth?

I also didn't like her clothes choice. You had such an opportunity to make it unique in some way. She seemed like she was wearing yoga pants or something.

That said great job and I look fwd to seeing more of your work!

I really appreciate your feedback, Strobel! Let me elaborate more on the idea of the video, since I didn't really do that in the OP :P

The environment you see in the video is all natural. The sky, the dunes, all of it. Nothing was keyed in, or altered in that sense.

As for the song, or story being too simple/long, it was definitely a challenge that I'd faced with this band. Particularly, since they are an instrumental postrock band, the music can be very drone-esque and drag on. I'd never shot a video so intense, or 100% story based. For this being a first time endeavor, I am confident in how it turned out! And yes. My glidecam became inoperable about 30 minutes into the set. It's a bummer, and it's ruined now, but it was definitely a learning experience.

Conceptually, the story is based around the True Self (cloaked figures) vs the Ego (female lead).
The bodies you see laying down are past failed attempts at the true self trying to kill the ego. This video is a representation of another attempt, although this time, successfully breaking the confines of the ego.

For clothing choice, we wanted the female lead to be wearing what she would normally wear to bed. Hence, she wakes up in the dunes wearing the same thing. We did however discuss multiple costuming ideas, but overall, this was the choice that I and the 1st AD agreed upon.

I really appreciate your words though. Thank you so much.

For sure man. last thought.

If it's what she would wear to bed then I don't think it's clear. pajamas would've been more clear something with a "cute" pattern on them since this was so dark in tone and I think we would've really loved a little levity.

Great job tho. it's def a challenging song to put video too.
