Auto VS Manual Focus

Can I damage the autofocus by turning the focus ring manually when it's set in auto mode? I ask because I am wondering if I can work the focus the same way I can work the manual iris button in auto mode.

It's perfectly safe to use the focus ring while set to auto focus because there's no actual physical link there. The same cannot be said for cranking the zoom ring while set to servo. That'll screw some stuff up.
