I was filming yesterday in the heart of Manhattan. All of a sudden, 4 dreaded words appear and bring along dark clouds over my head. AUTO S REEL LOCK. I have about 70 hours on the head. SO I know there is a bunch of posts here about this issue, but I did not find any that said if it was ok to use those cleaning tapes found at B&H Photo. Will it harm my precious in any way? Or will it help? And is there a specific brand I should I buy? THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to get THE MESSAGE from time to time. I just powered down for a few minutes and powered up with no issues. Not sure if that is the answer you were looking for, but the Reel Lock never did any harm to the camera or the footage.

I once had a Lock that took down both the camera and the tape inside. Had to finally send for service. (Than you Mack Warranty!)

How much did the REPAIR cost.?
im thinking of sending my DVX in for repair because i also have dirty a playhead.

i just shut it down and take the tape out and put it back in. I get it if i try to rewind it while it is playing for a long period of time. just hit stop and rewind. If you use the end search it will also eliminate all of these problems when queue'in up the tape.

Cleaning tapes didn't work for me. Like others mention, just shutting down for a couple minutes seems to get the job done. Funny how it seems to happen at the worst times.

I had never had that error in 4 years of shooting with my dvx, then on saturday i was shooting a big wedding and in the church just as the first hymn had finished and the vows were about to start i had this error flash up and then the cam powered down. I though hmmm, ok, i'll switch the power on again, same thing, S lock lock off and it powers down, so i'm begining to sweat a bit at this stage. Anyway, 3-4 mins of my panicing and clicking buttons off and on and fumbling around i finally take the tape and battery out and replace with fresh tape and the cam goes back to normal. I missed pretty much all the vows so i was gutted. The photographer was positioned right behind me with a view of my ikan monitor so he must have been thinking what an amateruish twat i was. Had 2 other cams on the shoot so it wasnt a total loss, but it made my angry none the less and what a time for the fail! So what precautions are there to make sure this never happens again?
