Auto Off - S Reel Lock error message

This past weekend, while shooting a wedding in 24PA mode on my DVX-100P, I received an "Auto Off - S Reel Lock" message that came suddenly and without warning. I was able to get my tape out, but was unable to continue shooting. The tape was pulled out in a loop from the cassette shell and was slightly crinkled when I took it out of the camera. I manually turned the hubs of the cassette and got the tape rewound back into its case and reinserted it into the camera, only to have the same error message and problem reoccur. I tried this about five times with the same tape and then tried a brand new tape several times to no avail before giving up. The new tape exhibited the same symptoms when removed from the camera - the tape was pulled out in a loop from the shell of the cassette. If anyone knows how to fix this, or can tell me what the "S Reel" even is, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Auto Off - S Reel Lock error message

I am not sure what the S-Reel Lock message means, but, usually when a tape is eaten means that the pinch rollers are dirty (that has been my experience anyway). Try a good cleaning and see where your at.

Good Luck

Parnelly,
Thanks for the suggestion. I found out through Panasonic's support line that the "S" in the S Reel Lock error message stands for Supply, so I have a supply reel lock-up issue. The technician also told me that there is nothing I can do to service this problem on my own and that I need to send it in for repair. :-[
I did try running the cleaning cassette through the camera like you said, but the camera ate that tape as well. It looks like I'm going to have to be without my precious for a while. Boohoo....
Anyway, thanks for the post.

Re: Auto Off - S Reel Lock error message

By the way I would suggest that if you ever have a tape get chewed up NEVER put it back in the camera. There is a good chance that you will do more damage by trying to put a damaged tape through the camera.

Re: Auto Off - S Reel Lock error message

Control Lab, I had about 140 hours on the heads when this occured. I wound up sending the unit in for service, since there weren't any parts I could service on my own. The silver lining in all of this, is that I bit the bullet and went ahead and ordered a new DVX100A. It arrived yesterday, thank goodness! I had to order it to stay in business (literally). It wasn't the ideal way to get the updated camera, but I'm pretty excited about it. Hopefully, I won't have any S-Reel Lock error messages on the new unit!

Tawsy, the tape really wasn't crinkled at all. It was just sticking out from the cassette shell in a small loop. I agree with you that it would be dangerous to reinsert a wrinkled and beat up tape back into the camera, but the tape in this particular situation actually didn't look bad, except for being pulled out from the cassette compartment. Thanks for the reminder, though.

Re: Auto Off - S Reel Lock error message

Only 140 hours and this happens - that's a bit alarming ! - I hope they can fix it under warrenty for you. - Just think , when you get it back you'll have TWO dvx's !!!!! :D :o ::) 8)

Re: Auto Off - S Reel Lock error message

oh-no, beginning to think that this might be a not so good thing for the dvx100a...

I've shot less than 20 hours and warning error came up saying 'Cylinder Lock'---couldn't record for a day, fine the next but now not playing back video consistently...
I'm imagining it to be a head thing, but so soon??????

I'm at only 60 hours and I just got a supply reel lock up. How much did the repair end up costing? Does the warranty cover a certain number of hours or how long I've had the camera?

Never mind all of that I just posted, I figured out the problem. Perhaps this will help someone else some day:
The supply reel is one of the reels that turns the hubs on the tape, so a supply reel lock can be the result of a faulty tape, rather than a faulty camera. Try a different tape before you freak out. If that works, I'd say try the problem tape just once more to make sure that's actually the problem, because it may have been a fluke within the camera itself. So if all tapes are working, I'd say give the camera a cleaning and be cautious and hope for the best...
