Auto Match Color from One Shot to Another

Is there any way to automatically change the color of one shot to match the color of another shot, in Premiere?

The question assumes you've got only one color in your shot, as in a full field of red. That is not usually the case with video.

If you have, as most video does, a full range of color in your shot, and you need to color correct the shot, there are a plethora of tools available in the Color Correction effects folder.

A full study on how best to use them goes way beyond the scope of any forum.

Perhaps I didn't state the question properly. If shot #1 has ideal color, and you want another shot to look like it, is there some way to tell Premiere, "make this shot look like #1"?

I'm at work so I can't pull it up, but there is a auto white balance filter, where you can select the color to balance off of. Assuming both of your clips have a piece of white, white balance off the clip you want to match to. I've done it before, and it get's pretty close (and you can tweak a little as needed).

If that button existed, there would be alot of colorists out of work! Best thing you can do is layer the 2 shots on top of eachother and change the positioning of each so you show both clips side by side. This way you can go into your 3 way or Fast CC and use your first shot as a reference.

on this subject when I apply the auto color effect it often creates a really nice even colour but the colour of the image flickers and changes during playback... any ideas why this might be happening?

i can't remember if i rendered it out to be honest... i thought i would have but now I'm doubting myself.

Is this a common issue on realtime playback that is not present when rendering out?

Auto color will always do that because unless you just have a static image where the lighting never changes it will constantly try to adjust the image which is the "flickering" you are seeing.

....and once you have it corrected, if you have other shots that need the same correction then right click on the corrected one then highlight all the ones you want to match, right click and choose paste attributes.

Yes I am saying it is essentially useless if you are using it to correct a normal run n gun type shot. You won't be happy with the color shifting.

thanks a shame :(

Really need to brush up on color grading. i use the color balance (RGB) for easy but I'm thinking that the more variable color balance with midtone, shadow & highlights options is probably the more professional way to do it without a third party plugin
