Auto/Manual/Infinity Focus control

I am trying to understand exactly what the "Inifinity" position on the Auto/Manual/Infinity Focus control switch does.

It seems to be somehow related to the Focal Length/Zoom but I haven't been able to find a clear explanation of what it does or under what circumstances it would be useful to use it.

Any clues?
