Looking for some advice or best practice.
I'm starting to mess about with v-log and doing some tests to get used to it. I've studied Barry's book, Panasonic's manuals, and a separate paper done by Barry on the DVX's V-log functioning. I've got a pretty decent academic understanding that whites are clipped at 80 IRE. So I am manually exposing (using the WFM and false coloring on my remote monitor) to keep levels below that upper limit. Works OK on a static shot.
Here's an example of an issue I am working to overcome: Say I need to do a shot with the DVX on a Ronin gimbal from inside a garage following a vehicle roll-out into bright sun. I can't adjust manually. Hoping auto iris can compensate. BUT what I am suspecting is that auto iris is still exposing to 100 IRE (or using the full IRE scale) when the camera is set in V-log, but I'm not sure that's the case. My test footage is blowing out certainly on manual (since I can't change anything) and it looks like it is on auto iris as well.
Would the solution be to adjust auto iris down by several stops? I believe there is a exposure compensation setting.... Is there some other auto setting or adjustment? Is the DVX, when set to v-log, supposed to automatically compensate exposure for the narrower IRE parameters? I can't seem to find anything succinct on this beyond how important it is to expose correctly within the narrower IRE "band" (if I missed it, PLEASE point me to that section!) so I'm hammering about with my test footage trying to get a handle on it. Knowing what others are doing in the field OR what the DVX is actually doing with regards to auto iris in v-log would be immensely useful!
Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated!
