HPX250: Auto Iris over sensitive?

I have noticed that the Auto Iris works a lot more frequently / quickly then the HVX200. It also has more split F-stops to work with and seems to adjust a little too much. I have noticed this both shooting a night football game and in daylight. Maybe the 250 is more center weighted then the 200 was? Anyone else experienced this? When I have had a locked off shot, movement of a bright object across the frame causes very sudden changes and is noticeable. If no one has seen this I might just do a test between the two cameras. Thoughts Barry Green?

Why do you shoot auto-iris in a situation like a football game where illumination doesn't change very much? Turn it off.
Does the camera have a mode where you can push a button to set auto-iris then lock it?
This push to set mode on Betacams was what we always used for ENG to prevent the iris pumping with transient changes in scene values.

Yes, while in manual iris you can push a button to adjust auto iris and release it.

I just used a AC-160 over the weekend and I found it VERY sensitive as well - probably the same software that controls the 250, 160 & 130. It was actually disturbing - hard to notice on the LCD in the field, easy in the editbay. Wonder if a firmware update and dial it down a bit as it was HARD & FAST. Or maybe more time with the camera and I'll find a menu setting to adjust it?

I expect some havent noticed this as many people never use the auto iris. I always have iris on manual, ill press one shot to let camera set what it thinks the iris should be then I manually tweak it up or down to my taste using the zebra's.

Whilst i havent got the 250, ive had the dvx100b, hmc150 and the 370 and its worked great on all those cams so the 250 should be fine. I can understand using full auto if its run and gun or spur of the moment stuff but if the cam is left on full auto, there's the risk of ruining a shot if the scene's lighting changes mid shot and the camera decides to open or close the iris.

I don´t use autoiris but autofocus a lot and must say that the AC160 is not as good at autofocusing as my HMC 151 was (sold it) and the 151´s autofocus was known to be rather mediocre.

I dislike using Auto Iris functionality... actually, I don't like Automatic anything. The push-auto for activating it temporarily comes in handy though.

I have a similar issue with my very old DVC80 (basically a DVX100 without the 24p modes). Whenever I shoot events with a flash, I have to turn off auto iris because it's fast enough to try and compensate for the flash.

This really isn't a bad thing, though. When you actually need auto functions, you want them to be responsive.
