Auto-iris on the HVX seems to under expose

Using my HVX the other day outdoors, I tried to set the camera to auto-iris, but when doing so, everything came out under-exposed. I think perhaps it was exposing to make sure that no highlights were blown out, but it was inevitable that the sky was going to need to be blown out, and I didn't want my subjects and 20% IRE. Is there a way to adjust how the auto-iris exposes (to allow it blow out highlights more and make it so the rest of the image doesn't come out under-exposed when outdoors?)

Yes, look at the A.Iris menu setting in the scene file. Its range is from -4 to +4, and each tick accounts for about 1/3 of a stop of exposure compensation, so +2 would be about 2/3 of a stop brighter than +0 would be.

A tool I use to fool the auto iris is an ND Grad filter - darkening the sky gives you a better exposure that's more balanced. I agree with Barry that using the set-up menu is a great help as well.
