Auto-Focus trouble

It seems that i cannot get the auto-focus to work. whenever i push the button, a message appears on the screen that says "MF ONLY"...(manual focus only..?). Even when i swith the focus mode to AUTO, it does not work.

Any suggestions? I am new to the camera so i have no idea if it is a setting or mechanical issue.

What kind of camera do you have??

If its the original DVX100, then in any of the progressive modes (30p, 24p.24pa) the autofocus function is not available.

Yup, i just figured that out yesterday. Now i feel like i asked a pretty dumb question. I noticed it was magically working in other Scene files, so i just assumed that in 30p, 24p and 24pa...the option was not available.

Thanks for your input though.....before i figured it out, i was beginning to wonder if the camera was broken.

BTW i do have the original DVX100

and it's not really called "auto focus" in 24p mode, it's called "focus assist". However, I have found it to be quite effective when using it on a crane with wide angle shots.

My advice is to stay on wide shot.
the auto focus does not work when you zoom too tight to detials.

another solution for my model is faster.
dvx 102ben is a pal version .
not because its pal but it come focus assist.
hence, what you need to do ,
is to maintain your stability ..it will slowly focus.
thats when you zoom in..
hence another solution for me.
is that i use a monopod for every of my event shoot in Singapore
that include wedding, birthday ..events ..
hence, simply just use manual focus..
dvx got sharper lense ..and the larger lcd viewfinder for sd camera
hence, i think you can try to work around it.

another comman factor..is low light condition.
i have to admit for low light condition, sony is still the best when it
come to focus and shooting.
hence for low lighting, my advice is to switch to manual focusing.
coz in low light condition, your camera focus wont be as fast as your finger and eye.
hence sometime when i shoot concert ..like pre concert shoot,
i try not to use video light in case, the light split over.
hence maual focus is still the best comparing to auto focus.
but your basic skill must be there.
zoom in check focus
is the basic for broadcast camera.
hence if you started from consumer, you wont get used to it.
dvx for manual focus, outbeat the rest in speed.
i took a while to get use to it...if you got a shoulder rest like rig..will be good.
coz the dvx is the only mech zoom that you can find for that price.
dvx is not an easy camera to master, but once you get used to it.
you will realised that its potential just like mac .
