Auto Focus questions for Barry (or anyone)

I didn't put this on the "focusing " sticky because that seems like its gone off on other matters. Don't know if this has been addressed elsewhere either.

Sometimes when in documentary run & gun especially I want to use autofocus on the HVX. (I realize that it is slow when in Progressive mode) When I do though i often get freaked out by looking at wild girations on the distance indicator in the viewfinder. Sometimes I'll see infintity popup when i know i'm only a few feet away.

The question is - do those viewfinder indicators really show where the lens is focusing when it is rapidly jumping around in auto?
So far the footage i've looked at hasn't been as weird as those numbers would indicate, but i haven't tested carefully

Please don't tell me that auto is not a professional option - i've been at this over 20 years. Sometimes it can be a a lifesaver - if it works.

It is jumping to those extreme distances but because you are wide the dof covers them. If you zoom in it won't be quite as bad because the shallower DOF will allow the AF to get a more positive lock. However if your footage looks acceptable on an HD monitor go with it.
