Auto Focus in 24p

I just bought a used DVX100a (I had an old DVX30), and I'm very happy with it so far. It does have about 400 hours on the heads, but everything else seems to be pretty keen.

HOWEVER... I cannot get the autofocus to work when I'm shooting 24p or 24pA. Any ideas? Can I make this happen?

I'm considering doing a factory reset, but don't want to screw anything up too badly!

thanks.

Auto focus in 24p is going to be extremely slow compared to 60i mode and not really recommended.

Learn to manual focus and the peaking function.

what exactly is "peaking"?

I am going to the ecuadorian amazon to shoot a documentary, and am looking for an easy and quick solution for 'run-and-gun' style shooting. i'm a bit concerned about always having to manually zoom given the circumstances.

suggestions?

the EVF detail button i think thats what its called :) on the back of the camera. turn it on and the "peaking" will be present around everything thats in focus. it sorta draws a thin white line around everything. hard to explain but you can easily tell when it works. I find manually controlling the DVX the only way to operate it.

Thanks for all of this. I'm still wondering if it's possible to turn on the AF function in progressive mode? I get an error message reading MF Only.

I will definitely take the time to learn the manual controls, but would like to have the option if it's there!

It should be there on the A. It isn't on the original. I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't just work, off the top of my head. Maybe there's some menu setting you need to tweak.

my 100A was able to engage auto function in 24pA ...

Also you should be able to use it in a pinch. Yes it's slower than in 60i, but not necesserily slower than your hand or your guess at the focus. So if it's situation where the camera can clearly discern what should be in focus you should be able to get some real world functionality out of it. But technically it is slower than autofocus in 60i.

I'd suggest you try it and see for yourself, but you'd have to be able to engage it.
