colleagues, help me!

i got both audio channels in auto and camera record audio not higher than -6db.
never.

whatever i use - int. mic, shotgut or lavalier... loud music in hall or whisper... it always -6db in Premiere CS5. and i always have to gain +6 db in postproduction to reach normal audio level.
EX1R just trim at -6db.

this really piss me off...

Please, help me to understand what's going on ?

In the Audio Input Menu: Set the trim at -41dbu and put the Audio level at 5 (the knob on the outside of the camera).

If that's too loud try -35dbu trim.

All external buttons on the back set to Manual/Ext.

The -41dbu actually turns UP your trim. It's a little confusing because -41 is numerically less than -6, but -41 turns up the signal. A "crisp" recording comes from your mic, and mic placement. Just try it out and decide if it works for you.

If you have the audio set to auto you are not really going to get a good recording, because the camera rides the gain, and in low noise situations it picks up a lot of noise as the mic becomes very sensitive. I did this once and after days of cleaning the audio I decided not to do it again.

My solution is to record the audio (assuming you are using a mono shotgun mic) into both channels in manual, and set one channel high and the other channel about 2/3's of the other one (i.e. ch1=6, ch2=4). Now I don't have to monitor the gain. I use the louder channel when editing, but if that channel clips/peaks I have the other channel recorded lower as a backup.
