Just wondering how you American citizens celebrate your 4th of July?
(other nationalities feel free to speak about your national day)
Our equivalent is "Australia Day" which commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 (referred to as "Invasion Day" by some indigenous Aboriginals). That just happens to be today, 26th January and it seems like increasing numbers of my fellow countrymen feel it is impossible to celebrate anything, especially our National day, without getting blind drunk. (I suspect it's the same with St. Pats day in Ireland)
I feel sad for those that think draping our national flag over their back, consuming as much alcohol as possible, and acting obnoxiously and antisocially is any sort of celebration at all. These are the people I wish weren't my fellow countrymen and am least proud of. Of course many will disagree and say it's all just good fun.
Is it similar over there?
For the record I am a non-religious, non-drinker, but don't mind what people do so long as it's in moderation while in general public areas. What they get up to in their own home I couldn't care less.
(I'm expect I'll cop some flak from at least some of the other Aussies on this forum)
