Audition Grabs

Just thought I'd post a few grabs from a monster audition I shot. 104 actors=one very long day. :) I'm producing a DVD for DC producers to be able to find local actors.

how long are they in front of the camera? do they just say lines from whatever they want or do you have them do something specific? Do you categorize them by say drama, comedy and the such?

why am i asking so many questions? just curious i guess

Each actor gets to perform a 3 minute monologue of their choice. The actors have a real tendancy to pick something uber dramatic, so there's a lot of emotion, yelling, and intensity. After a few hours, you're begging for a laid-back audition or two. :) We don't do any categorizing and hopefully they show a little range during the audition.

Sure. The lights are all on an overhead grid. Three PAR cans behind the actors at stage center, left, and right providing backlight and five Source Four ellipsoidals acting as a broad sweep of key/fill.

can you talk a bit about your lighting setup?

Those colors look rich as cream! Did correct or filter this clip? Is that all lighting? Love the skin tones.

Thanks 330ceo and Zach. The color correction is pretty minor. I generally like to crush the blacks a little bit and roll off the highlights--nothing too radical. I also warmed the image just a tad. It's mostly lighting and careful exposure. I adjusted the exposure precisely for each actor's skin tone. Plus it was a bit of a luxury to have eight lighting fixtures--especially those lovely Source Fours.

This was the second big audition we did and it's really cool watching the first 50 actors. The next 25 and you go ok, I can deal with this, but I'm getting tired. The last 25-30 actors merge into a blur and you're begging for mercy. :) The organizer is hard core and wants to make the next audition two days--which seems insane to me.
