here's an audition we shot with the DVX today for a short film about a chap who's not too happy. In this scene he is tormented, waiting in the car and he decides to get out holding a stick (which will be eventually be a sinister looking weapon).

Shot it with gain too high, so decided to go the whole hog and make it B&W.

Comments please, should we use this actor for the main support character? (none speaking part)

i think any actor has potential with the right director. are you looking for old black and white or just modern black and white? If you are going modern then leave off the flicker. a great example of a great b&w film is clooney's "goodnight and goodluck"

if you are going for an aged film look, you should try something like this:

I think the editing doesn't support the mood. we need to see more of the person. Non-speaking roles MUST be more charachter based and facialy focused. before telling you to ditch him, id want to see his emotion. you kinda left it out of the test completely...

great comments...thank you.. really helpful.

Not really sure on the look yet.. I think we'll use colour in the final thing.

what did you do to make the edges so soft on the footage you posted?

As an actor, i like realism in characters, he really looked and felt the part. But one huge part for me in storytelling, is the eyes of the actor. I felt nothing from his eyes, i felt it from the music.

The music gave the feeling of the scene. Now he needs to be in the zone so much so that the music compliments his storytelling to make a beautiful composition and not vice versa.

ya no kidding.... usaually supplying some lines for him to read over is a good idea for an audition

I couldn't tell much from this, but I will say that was some of the best leg shaking I have ever seen out of an actor. From that alone, I could tell a sense of uneasiness from him. In general, I felt his movments in the car exuded a kind of fear/uneasiness. However, his movements outside of the car betrayed this innitial sense. He suddenly started to move very nonchalantly even borderline confidently. For me this really did not match up with his body language from the first half of the scene.
