Audio

This could be a very dumb question but here goes. I have not used my AF100 very much yet as I am presently shooting more still work; slowly acquiring more video work. I recently bought two lav mics for the future occasion where I may need to have two talking head in the scene. My thinking was that I could plug them into the two XLR inputs and they would record independently of one another. Problem is I can only get one mic to work at a time. They will both work, but they will not both record simultaneously. Is this not normal. What am I missing here. Thanks, Joe Robbins

Joe, I saw your recent post lamenting how no one was helping you. Lots of helpful people here. If you look at all the threads and I think you can see that.

I can tell you a couple of things to start. You put this in the wrong area. You should have put this in the Location/Post Sound Forum area. I realize you are talking about a specific camera, the AF100 but you will get a more informed response in the forum here that deals specifically with audio.

I don't know the AF100 so I cannot offer much meaningful help but your problem is very odd just in a general sense. On most cameras you have a switch that will either combine the two channels into a mono signal or leave them as channels 1 & 2. I don't know Panasonic cameras so I cannot say for sure.

The first thing to check is your switches, if there are any, right beside the XLRs and then go into the menus and look for similar audio controls.

I just read this on the AbelCine site, maybe it applies in some way to your problem
Why do I have no audio recorded on playback?
Make sure that variable frame rate (VFR) mode is turned off. If VFR is enabled, even if your frame rate is set to match your recording rate, the camera will not record any audio. This is especially confusing because the camera shows audio meters and audio can be monitored. Therefore, always be sure that VFR is disabled before trying to record any audio.- See more at: http://blog.abelcine.com/2011/01/14/your-af100-questions-answered/#sthash.LzYym7WC.dpuf

Good luck.

Question one is, if it's a wireless set up, are both on the same frequency? If not, there is a switch above both audio inputs that can be set to "line" and "mic". They should both be set to mic ("line" being if you took a powered source from an audio board or something). If both are set to "mic", then also check to see if the inputs are set correctly. Input one can be set to internal, channel one, or channel two. Input two can be set to internal or channel two. Ideally, you'll have input one to channel one, and input two two channel two when using two mics.

Another question is are these mics internally (battery) powered? If not, you'll need to turn phantom power on to both mic inputs (just below the input select switches).

Most lavs that I use don't want to see 48 volts but they need a bit of power. I use Ambient converters that step down the voltage and bring the XLR down to the connector on the Lav which in my case are designed for Lectrosonics transmitters. They are not inexpensive.

Problem solved guys. Mcbob correctly suggested looking at the Audio menu. CH1/CH2 needs to be selected - I was on CH1 only. Somehow while cruising through the menus I missed this. Thanks for help.
