Audio/ Video sync

Hello all, I am experiencing some audio delay in my projects editing in the Avid Xpresss DV 4.6. My footage is captured in 24p (f4). Is there a reason for this if so what is the solutions?
Example of problem:
I produce 30 seconds commercials for clients. I drop the voice over in the timeline which is timed out to 29 sec. then when I put the video in my timeline it is hard to match the audio with it. I have 2gig of ram, G5 2 ghz, rideon card 256 mb 9800. I thought my specs was good; is there anything else I overlooked?
Thanks all

Raj

Re: Audio/ Video sync

Does the audio drift, or is it out of sync on the sources to start with? If using the original DVX100 camera, make sure you set the audio delay during capture to 2 frames.

Re: Audio/ Video sync

I didn't set my audio to delay during capturing but I will go look to see if that is my problem.
No the audio is not out of sync and as far as I know it isn't drafting either. This is what I am noticing...during play back with this certain project the video seems to move in its regular speed then for a second it speeds up a little then goes back to regular speed. It is as if I don't have enough ram or something.
Please give me more feed back.
I just imported other 24p footage with audio but I am going to try adding new audio to make montage and see if it does it in this project.
Thanks a lot.

Re: Audio/ Video sync

Make sure your dirves are fast enough and if FireWire that they are not sharing the FireWire bus with any other devices.

Re: Audio/ Video sync

The way my system is set up is that I am using an external 80 gig drive USB connected in the back of my G5, also connected to the extra USB is a extranal DVD writer and my camera.  Is that causing conflict?

I just finish editing some clips together and still it is doing the same thing:  I imported a song from a CD and matching it with live footage performance.  Before you answer, yes...the I understand that live performance isn't always in the same tempo of the song but I went in and drop the pieces in where they fit.  During playback..it gets out of sync and I can't edit properly because as I let my clip play it  gets worse.
anymore suggestions....desparately need help here....Do I need more ram or what?  I am 200 now.

Re: Audio/ Video sync

When you say 200 for RAM, are you saying Mb or Gb! (that would be a lot). Mimimum is really 1 Gb of RAM these days, more if you can afford it.

Re: Audio/ Video sync

sorry, I am saying 2GB Dual 2 GHz, number of CPUs 2, L2 Caxhe 512 KB, Bus Speed 1 GHz, is that enough or do I need more. I have never experience this kind of problem before working with the Avid. Ofcourse this is my first time working on Xpress with a Mac.

Re: Audio/ Video sync

No, that should be fine. DO you have the latest version of 4.6? I think there might be a 4.6.x available.

Re: Audio/ Video sync

Yes I do....Just downloaded it about 1 week ago. Is there anything else?

Re: Audio/ Video sync

is all of your media on the same external drive? Is it USB 2.0? Have you tried copying eveything onto an internal drive? Or taking your external drive out of the ext. case and hooking it up inside the computer?

Re: Audio/ Video sync

That is my next option....I have my media material all going to an external drive (USB 2) and also I am going to shoot with reguler 30i NTSC instead of 24p so see if it continues to do it.
Yes my video is in sync...no breaks... Thanks a lot guys if none of this work I guess it will time for a phone call. I would rather shoot my footage in 24p instead other wiise.

Re: Audio/ Video sync

Everyone, I figured it out.....it is the DV offset in the capture that caused the problem. So just incase anyone else have this problem....give them heads up.
