Audio 'ticking' noise after capture - please help

So I've had my 100a for a few years now and I am currently shooting a documentary with it. I'm encountering a very odd problem that I have never had in the past when I listen to my audio after capturing it in final cut. There seems to be a strange digital ticking noise from my tapes and I was wondering what it might be. Every second or so, and only at specific places in the footage, this noise rears its ugly head and it is starting to make me very nervous. I've only been shooting b-roll thus far but soon I am going ot be shooting more important situations and quality of the audio is very important. If anyone has some ideas, I am all (sorry for the pun) ears. Thanks.

Get a tape head cleaner. Run it for 15 secs and then test the unit to see if it is any better. Camera might just need a good clean. Good luck

Okay, I will try that thanks. The only thing is I read somewhere else on this board that you should never use a tape cleaner and should just clean it by hand as tape can leave residue. Is that a better option you think?
