AUDIO TECHNICA ATR-6550 for DSLR

I've tried this

I've tried this

I used it and it blows. Horrible quality. For marginally bad, but acceptable for some stuff audio I've used a $150 videomic. Only for stuff where low production values don't matter.

For anything you want to have your name on you need REAL audio. bare minimum a h4n with a nice shotgun AND a wired lav.

The h4n looks good for $299. I have some nice Sony wired lavs, but need a budget shotgun. ?

People actually use LAVs? Just for interview work right? Surely not for narrative...

Either way I personally don't like the sound that comes from them vs shotgun or cardioid on a boom pole, and I find their presence in the frame during an interview distracting and tacky, and the attempts to hide them worse...I guess if you're a one man crew...but still...eh.

Yes, some people actually use wired lavs, along with shotguns, cardoids and expensive wireless lavs, however we never see any of them in the shot. But thanks for the warning about tacky distractions. I'll make a note of it.
Just bustin on you Ben.
Actually some older premium quality Sony lavs like the ones I have, have a really good sound. They aren't crispy sharp like my shotguns, but for some voice work they have a really smooth warm tone. Also wired lavs sound much better than any wireless ones unless you really have bucks to spend on good ones.
Many iconic audio artists still prefer analog over digital. What players like Miles Davis recorded in the mid 50s in analog mono still kick ass today. Don't underestimate some nice older audio gear, you might find something useful in it for your productions. After all you wouldn't toss out any old Zeiss lenses, would you?

Do you guys think they would be okay for high school student films? I'm a teacher and I'm on a budget and would like to have a mic for each group.

thanks.

Just bought one.
For some reason this mic send A LOT of noise to the 7D camera. audio is barely useable. Noise levels very high, voice level very low (even holding the mic directly in front of the mouth).

I needed it to record some interviews but there is no way I am going to use this piece of *** in a real production.
I'm returning mine to the store, will probably buy a separated recorder and a decent mic.

DO NOT BUY THIS MIC
