Audio Technica AT875r - Winjammer / deadcat options

I need a windjammer for my AT875r... I bought a rycote 12cm one, and it's clearly longer than that, which means it gets slightly in frame on my FS7 when shooting wide - very annoying.

So what options are there? That might seem silly, but I've been looking for a while and the Rycote one made me unsure what size to go for?

I use the Rode PG2 grip and the WS6 softie with mine but for my camera I took off the rubber ring and cut about two inches off one for my camera then re-glued the ring back on.

I sometimes use a deadcat cover that I bought a long while ago for the ORIGINAL Rode Videomic Pro, the grey one. It fits over the foam of the original Videomic and also fits well over the foam of my AT875r. I also use the smaller footprint/tighter fitting black windjammer covering that was sold for for the newer Rode Videomic Pro. It's much less bulky/fluffy than the grey one (possibly therefore not as effective as it's all about trapping still air) but is less likely to get in wide shots on my FS5 or C100.

I really do like Gary's solution above though as I have a WS7 (longer than the WS6) - for my Rode NTG-3 - and that is fairly effective wind protection. That's the route I'd go (cutting down a WS6) if doing it again.

The other solution is to use a Rycote Invision Video microphone mount on a hot shoe of your FS7. That will not only give superb vibration isolation but allow you to position the mic slightly higher up (and still use your current windsock). This means it will be out of frame when using wide angles. Some info about it and pictures of it on my old EX3 on my website, link below.

Thanks guys, really helpful.

How easy was it glueing the sock back together? Just superglue?

Reviews on the videomic pro deadcat seem pretty negative, so might go with the WS6... is there not a version that is smaller?

As for the hotshoe, I would do this, but I often use the UWP-D11 radio mic with hotshoe adapter, so would rather leave it free.

I think I just used some bostik type glue as the superglue may be too much and eat the cellular foam inside.

From what I remember it is easy to do and the biggest problem was the rode tag that is fitted as I cut mine just about where it is fitted to the softie.

I think the WS6 is the shortest that rode currently do.

I use a ws6 on my 875. Admittedly, the ws6 is a bit too long, but if your shock mount has the shortest possible distance between suspension members, it really helps. i use the shortest version of the K-Tek ksm series and it works fine.

I have a couple of AT-875r mics and I bought small deadcats for them from thewindcutter.com, item WC04-AT875-STORM and they're really good for wind protection - unfortunately, they went out of business recently. Sometimes I see them sold by private parties on eBay (though I checked right now and there's nothing at the moment).
