audio sync completely off

I filmed a project in 23.976 a while back on my DVX 100A, and have now just started to attempt a capture, which I have never worked with the 23.976 format before. I notice that my audio isn't in sync, even remotely close. I'm pretty sure it is way over 10 to 20 frames off, and I can't even tell if it's in front or behind, cause it's so off. I go in to try and shift it on the time line, and it will not line up at all, they seem to be different lengths or something. I tried all 4 of the tapes and it is the same. I don't think the 2 frames behind will work here, as I did do it and it didn't make a difference. I am capturing straight through my capture card right from the camera into the computer, I have no mojo thingy. I looked at the 24p.com website but nothing there really seems to address my issue and the AVID forums are no help either. Any ideas? I have 2.41 GHz and 2 gigs of RAM, running off my PC, and I just have a normal capture card I capture right from my camera.

Are you in a 23.976 NTSC project type? If you capture the same tape in a 30i NTSC tape, is it in sync?

Michael

I am doing it in a 23.976 NTSC project. When I capture to 30i NTSC, it is a always in sync and I never have a problem. Have done numerous projects in 30i and never had a problem......

I am having this EXACT same problem at this very moment.
The way it goes down with me:

I've got all my settings for 23.976 drop-frame. I'm capturing from my DVX100P straight into my firewire.

during the capture, everything seems perfectly fine. Watching it capture, it's all in sync.

Then when I'm finished, I check out the clip from the bin, and it does this glitchy thing where, when you play it, the video freezes on its current frame while the audio plays on. When you pause it, the video then catches up to the current frame. Note that in trying it over and over, it hasn't always done this, but it's certainly come up several times.

What I do is close down Avid and re-open it. Then when I load in the clip from the bin, it plays just fine, audio and video - except that the two are completely, uselessly out of sync. And they don't seem to FALL out of sync either - they just start way way off, by several seconds it seems, and they stay that way. Like dog said, I tried syncing them up by eye, but it's as if each is playing at a different rate, they just cannot sync up. Another thing I noticed: While the audio finishes, the video never does. Even though I cut the capture after the last credit rolled, the video doesn't even get there.

Audio was recorded in 48K, and those settings are appropriate. I'm using Xpress Pro v 5.5.3.

I've been hunting around, and I just can't figure this out. It's driving me crazy, and I have a really tight deadline. I hope someone here knows the solution.

Okay I just figured something out... If you increase the speed of the video to 125%, the sync appears perfect...

but I still don't know what's wrong! How do I keep this from happening? How do I properly capture this god forsaken footage?

Not that I think it is related, but 23.976 captured footage in non drop frame and not drop frame as mentioned in one of the posts. Make sure the Film/24p settings are correctly set for the capture with CADENCE being NORMAL or ADVANCED depending on how it was recorded. Do not capture as NONE as it will play back 25% slower and is how you get slomo when capturing 30p for video only capture.

MichaelP, I think you hit the nail on the head actually...
All this time, I haven't even considered changing the cadence from Normal to Advanced, because I was so confident that the material wasn't shot in Advanced. I have no need for it, have never personally shot in it, but when I changed the cadence it worked. It's capturing perfectly.

I guess these things always end up coming down to something silly, but honestly, I would have put money on this not being shot in 24PA.

At least it's working now - Thanks so much!

Ok, I really hope that is it for me too. I am not sure if I captured it in advanced either, as I shot it almost 2 years ago. I will try tomorrow, Thanks for the input folks, I'll let you know how it goes. Ben

And yes, Thomsitt's problem sounds exactly the same as mine, even the video gets cut off at the end, chances are this is it. yea!

Thank you all so much, that was it!!!!!! I recorded in advanced mode and didn't have it selected for the cadence, I will look out for these settings in the future, I guess It's good to write down everything so that when you go in for post you know what's going on. Live and learn....... You guys rock!!!!! ;)
