Audio Recorders with Internal Cue / Tone Generator That Can Be Triggered Externally?

Hi everyone.

I'm working on putting together a bloop slate-type sync system for when I'm doing double system audio recording while shooting 16mm film. I have an Arri SR3, so shooting sync sound is not an issue....we're not talking about a wind-up Bolex here :) I've built and experimented with a couple of different devices and systems, but from trial and error I've come to the conclusion that when I'm doing solo run and gun shooting, the easiest and best option for me would be an audio recorder that (a) has an internal cue tone generator that (b) can be triggered externally (by a contact closure, voltage, etc.). Does anyone know if such a portable recorder exists, let alone one of the compact types with built-in stereo mics?

I've already experimented with this kind of system using a compact 4-track Tascam recorder, using channels 1 and 2 for stereo audio and channel 3 for an external audio cue tone generator. The downside to this setup is that the Tascam actually records the 4-track recording as two separate stereo clips, and when lined up and played simultaneously, I've found that the sync between the two audio tracks can drift by a few frames here and there for longer recordings. That said, I'd prefer having the sync cue tone on one or both channels of the main stereo audio track. I thought about the option of using an audible tone generator or buzzer in close proximity to my stereo mics to generate the sync mark, but this won't work well for shooting in loud settings.

Anyway, from my research so far it doesn't look like a portable recorder is available with an external cue trigger, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks for any suggestions!

I **believe** the Tascam DR 60D has a tone generator? I don't use that, but there's a button and some menu items. It does have a remote jack.

THe DR40 (probably others?) has a feature that will automatically play a head or head and tail beep whenever you start or stop recording. The beep is recorded (head only since after the stop it's not recording...) and outputs both out the headphone/ line out jack.

How are you doing the visual side of the slate system?
How does the video signal and the audio signal tie together? Cable or wireless?
If wireless is there any delay / latency in the system?

The DR-40 does not have the internal slate feature. AFAIK, the DR-60 and 70 do.

Um, actually I tested it on mine before I posted so, yes it does.

Menu:Rec Settings: Auto Tone:
At that point you can pick Off, head, Head+Tail
You can also set the Volume andLength.

I'm looking at it as I type

I thought I was losing my mind, my DR-40 did not have that menu item .. but I had not updated the firmware (ver. 1.10) in a while, since I rarely use it these days . In any case I updated to the latest (firmware ver. 2.10, build 0094, 10-27-15) and low and behold... Thanks Scott

PS- I still have a PSC bloop slate (from the 16mm days).. another piece of gear that hasn't seen the light of day in quite a while.
