Anyone can recommend a recorder to replace my Zoom H4? Basically me set-up is as follows Rode NTG2 > MixPre (that i just got to give my boom op better ability to boom and monitor audio) > Zoom recorder... Well not really as the audio from MixPre is Line while Zoom H4 doesn't take line audio... Or am i missing something.

I need a basic recorder for those times when production can't afford sound man.

This has been discussed at great length in countless threads. In fact, if you look over the first two pages of the Audio forum, you'll find a couple of recent ones with plenty of good information. I count at least 7 threads on the first two pages that talk about various sound recorder options.

Or, use the Search function.

Tascam DR-40. It accepts line level in from your mix-pre. If you want to spend more, you can always get the Roland r-26, it too accepts line input through its XLRs like the DR-40.

So i just spoke to a soundman who said that XLT on Zoom recorder is mic but 1/4" is line and according to him (trusted guy that i worked with many times) all i need is XLR to 1/4" cable or 1/4" adapter for my XLR cables.

Again, this has been discussed ad nauseum around here. H4 or H4n? That makes a difference. Here are a few places to start.

Have you tried or tested either of the recorders you're suggesting? If so, I would love to hear a "review" of them. What's your budget. both the h4 and h4n have line in.
