Audio Questions

I recently bought the DVX 100B and LOVE IT! Im a high school student on a limited budget, but already have the filters, 5 batteries, a few cheap tripods. I tape a lot of sports (panning and tilting) and I am in need of a cheap but worthwhile tripod that will get the job done. I've heard Bogan is the way to go? After ruining my old camera from extensive VCR use I am determinded to never use it for capturing or playback. I am wondering wheather I should buy a deck or just a cheap consumer camera? My final question is about the on board microphone. I am wondering just how different a good shotgun mic will sound.
-Last question...is anyone familiar with student (high school) gettying education discounts and from what companies?

Sounds like the Bogen/Manfrotto 503 head might be your best cost/performance comromise. I'd say go with a cheap consumer camcorder if you're on a budget.

A good shotgun mic is essential for capturing dialogue scenes, and using it on a boom pole is even better. the on board mic is only good for ambiance or a reference track.

I use a camcorder other than the DVX instead of a deck and have had good success going that way. For outdoor use the shotgun works well and Rode makes some good choices for about 200.00 -- a good mic for indoor use would be the Octava (sound-room.com I think is the correct URL). B&H has good prices on shotgun mikes including Rode. Also try www.techbargains.com to find a deal on a cheap camcorder to use as a deck. If anyone has a deal going it will probably be posted on the site with a link. On "Black Friday" there were some nice camcorders going as low as 169.00 -- as we get closer to Dec. 25th there will probably still be some good deals.

I've been using a Sennheiser ME66 shotgun mic a few times with the DVX and the sound is a whole lot better. The first time I used it I was taping a friends wedding and the results sounded almost as good as if I had had someone with a sound boom.

The ME66 is a bit long for the DVX though but it's the best I can borrow for free ;)
