Audio Question: 2 Inputs, Both Channels?

Hi all, i'm a few weeks away from affording an HVX but have one very important question. I used a Sony HDV a while back and remember one very irritating thing about it.

I had a lav mic plugged into the XLR input 1 and a second lav plugged into input 2. I could get sound through both the left and right channels for input one, but the second input would only allow the sound through the left channel. I looked in the manual, and sure enough, it wasn't a flaw, it was a "feature".

I just wanted to make sure the HVX doesn't have this same "feature" and I can, in fact, get audio through both the left and right channels when both inputs are used at the same time.

Thanks.

No, on the HVX, input 1 goes to one channel, input 2 goes to the second channel if using two mics. if you want something different, you're going to have to use a stereo mixer and send that to both inputs.

the only other combo is if using one mic on input 2, you can send it to both channels.

What you are asking for, in essence, is something where the left channel of a stereo microphone comes out of the left AND right speaker, as does the right channel. It ain't gonna happen in-camera, but it is easy to do in virtually any NLE.

There are 4 channels on the HVX. There are four input sources: internal mic L, internal mic R, XLR 1, and XLR 2.

All of those are treated discretely. You cannot mix internal mic and XLR 1 audio on the same channel, for example. Each is recorded to their own discrete channel.

The only duplication that happens is that you can choose to assign XLR 2 to go to both channels 1 & 2. But that's it. Any further mixing of audio would need to be done in post.
