Audio queries on the HVX

Ok, this is probably directed specifially at Jan but if anyone has some additional knowledge, please chime in.

I realize the HVX is still in prototype phase but was wondering what the audio specs were going to be? I read it will have 4 channels, how will the extra 2 be inputed (extra add on ala the SDX900?)?

Also, is there any consideration for getting a 24/96 recording sample? Maybe thru the add on for the other two channels (standard camera 16/48 2 channels, with add on either 4 channel 16/48 or 2 channel 24/96) ? Without the limitation of tape, it seems this could be done "fairly" easily (although adding a few bucks to cost).

I would offer this case in favor of 24/96: after the HD hype has fallen away, the superior audio of 24/96 could keep the HVX as an ENG standard for years to come (speaking from personal experience, it was the good audio that pushed the DVX over the edge for me).

I realize it might be too soon to be talking about these details yet, but if not great!

From what I understand, there are four uncompressed 16-bit 48khz audio channels available in DVCPRO50 or DVCPRO-HD. (actually DVCPRO-HD supports up to 8, but the camera only supports four).

Right now, one way to get four channels in would be to use the XLR inputs for ch1 & 2, and use the onboard stereo microphone for 3 & 4. We've lobbied Panasonic for other ways... but don't know what the final implementation may be. Maybe there'll be an add-on module, or maybe input through the line-level RCA jacks, don't know.

I think it would be extremely unlikely to consider any other type of recording format, such as 24/96. Might be sweet, but I think they're planning on staying 100% DVCPRO-HD-compatible, since the camera can feed a tape deck or capture application that expects DVCPRO-HD.

I'd love to see a 24/96 option as well, that would totally rock.

Yeah, I feel greedy even mentioning it but what can it hurt. Just as we are moving into a HD world we are also advancing to 24 bit audio aquisition.

Prior to the DVX, sound had been a joke at the prosumer level. As the professional equipment starts adapting 24/96 it would be great to see Panasonic continue to be a leader.

Thanks for info on channel 3&4 Barry.

I don't know... I actually wouldn't worry too much about 24/96 unless it could be input digitally to the camera. I doubt the onboard analog and a/d circuitry of a 6,000 camera would be up to the task of making higher sample rates/sizes worth it. So if there's any lobbying for higher rates, make sure it comes with digital ins!

That introduces a whole new feature request...timecode/word clock input. Never seen this on a prosumer priced camera. That certainly would be sweet but I'm guessing we have been sitting on Santa's lap too long. :)
