I recorded some footage to the dvx100a with a small sony shotgun mic (made for pd150). I monitored the audio with headphones and everything sounded good. Furthermore, when I reviewed the tape afterward through the camera (headphones) it sounded fine as well. However when I captured to Premiere Pro 2.0 the audio the audio was soft and slightly distorted (like a bad radio signal).
I figure it maybe a problem with the firewire cable, soundcard, or a setting on either the camera or premiere when I recorded it.
