Audio Problem

When recording to the P2 cards there is a low level digital chatter or timecode like noise. It only happens on the cards not on tape. It seems that there is interference as the camera writes to the card. The noise is not there in stand by. We are having the same problem on two cameras. Any ideas?

I had the same problem sent it back to Pannasonic repair and it came back with the same problem. They said they couldn't hear anything. I don't have the best speakers and I can hear it. I'm putting together a tape vs P2 demo to show them the difference.
It's horrible!

How bad is it exactly this noise problem, think about you making interview and is this a pal version hvx what we talk about ?
I have heart about the canon xh a1 motor noise and tape recording chatter on pal version.
Was glad that these problems not present in the hvx now I'm getting scare

AC and DC it is the same. The noise is there even if nothing is connected and the internal mic is off. Try it. There is no noise until you start recording then you hear this low level digital interference which continues until the card finishes writing. The frequency of the noise is greater in HD than SD, which makes sense considering the greater data flow. Our cameras are HVX202en in Australia. Has anyone found the same problem in the HVX200?

I know exactly what you are talking about. I have had the same problem. Long story short, there are two solutions. First, always record an Audio backup to a seperate recorder (something like a Sound Devices 744). Second, Firewire out of the camera to your computer or external hard drive. This will get rid of the noise. I am happy to give you the long version if you would like it.

A completely separate issue. I found this out while tracking down the original problem described above.
There is a noise floor issue when recording a sound level that is too low. If, while in post the level needs to be boosed, there is a small amount of TC bleed that will be heard.
If you are sending the right level to the camera, this will not be a problem.

Hope these two will help.

Sorry, not my footage and I signed a confidentiality. I can ask my client, but it's unlikely. If you have ever made a TC transcription recording, there you go.

well thats understandable i suppose - I cant post most of my work either :) anyone else with the same problem and an example they can post?

You don't need a clip to hear the noise. Just plug in your headphones, turn down or off the mic inputs and start recording to the P2 card. You should hear the noise if your camera has the problem.

Hmm I can definitely hear it in my headphone connection but it never goes to the actual recording on mine. I always figured it was just a noisy headphone preamp. If I plug my headphones into my computer I can "hear" my mouse wheel scroll too. Not that it has anything to do with it I just find it amusing...

I have two cameras and use the internal mic as well as external sennheiser condensers and have never heard this problem. (Even studying extreme low level signals) Is it possible that you are picking up RF somewhere in your shooting environment?

I made a post about this months ago on this forum and nobody responded to it :(

Tony, in my case, the TC dithering noise ONLY happens if the Upper slot P2 card is used. If you ONLY use the Lower slot for recording, then there is no noise recorded to the card.

In both situations, the dithering is audible via the headphone socket.

Recording out via the firewire to a FS100 is clean.

My machine went back to Panasonic Europe under warranty and came back recently. I will be starting filming again on Monday and will post here what I hear, or not hear hopefully.

Best, Tim

NB. the noise is definitely NOT RF from anywhere or anything. It is being generated within the HVX machine itself.

My machine is a UK PAL version. I was recording in 1080i50 and 720p25 modes.

What does Jan C.-L. think about it ?????
Is it normal?
Maybe they can shield the upper slot better from the audio circuit????
