Audio primer?

So I'm a poor college student and I'm too far into my major to change to film, which is what I originally wanted and could likely get into at this point. I'm making due by creating videos, short digital films, etc. I'm about ready to step things up with professional grade equipment (purchasing a DVX100b next month), however the biggest problem I have is a lack of knowledge.

Audio is extremely important to me and probably the main reason why so many of my pieces are either dubbed or without dialogue. But I have a strong love for capturing accurate diegetic sound, which is why I came here. Basically, I don't have much experience with audio equipment at all. I want to get quality mics, but I don't really know what I'm looking for beyond what other people recommend, so I'm wondering if anyone knows of some good primers to help noobs like myself really get the hang of things? Obviously, on-hand learning is going to be the best teacher, but if I can just get a grasp on how recording even works, use of mixers & preamps, what mics are better for each situation, etc., etc. The basics, you know?

So. Yeah. That was long winded.

Guh. I just found the thread below with a very handy mini-tutorial and lots of links, thanks to Yankee, Wabbit, and others.

Damn. Now I'm that guy.

go and work on normal production or volunteer for free , that would give you more answers then learn swim by wire :-)
