Audio present but distorted on tape, won't play back on deck

When capturing from a tape (Panasonic AY-DVM63AMQ) I shot via the DVX-100b, I found that when I played it back on my deck (Sony GV-D1000) the sound was mostly absent, occasionally cutting in and out. When I played it back on the camera, that sound was there but somewhat distorted, with a kind of ringing noise behind it. Yet other sound recorded on the same tape just minutes before was OK. I was using a wireless lav mic.

Anyone have any ideas about what's going on?

Not sure about the ringing, but in a case like this with the skipping you should always try to play/capture from the camera that recorded it... sometimes alignment differences between recording and playback tape decks cause these problems.
