audio preamp fs 100 ?

Hi guys ,

I am thinking of getting the fs100 instead of the 5d mkiii , last year I shot my first feature using the 60d
It was a 43 minutes short film and one of the biggest problem I had was the sound recording
I used pmd661 along with the ntg2 , though the audio quality was ok but it was a nightmare not to monitor ur recording, we lost many days of shooting and hard work because of no sound or clipped one ,also not to mention the extra hard work to sync audio with video in post.

I will be upgrading to ntg3 and if the audio in the fs 100 will work just fine with the ntg3 I will definitely buy this cam with no hesitation .

The preamps are not bad on the FS100! Even when using the onboard mic ith automatic levels, the noise level is very decent. The only benefit of external recording would be 24 bit PCM instead of 16 bit on the FS100.

how this effect the quality ?

Same as dynamic range for pictures. A suddenly screaming actor may just not clip while on 16 bit it goes over 0 dB.
My Tascam DR-100 can record 24 bit 96 khz PCM, I don´t know what other external recorders can do.

we can handle minor clipping in post , what i want to know is the recoreded sound quality ?

I cannot distinguish the FS100 sound from my Tascam (and I once sent back some loudspeakers to the manufacturer because they were broken and the manufacturer sent me new ones stating they were indeed broken but they could only measure but not hear it.^^)

But make sure the FS100 is set to PCM and not Dolby Digital and make sure your NLE can handle it. Sony Vegas can´t read the PCM stream from the ACHCD files while Premiere CS 5.5 can.

Technically, is there any difference in recording dialogue and background sounds between 16 and 24 ?
