GH5 Audio Phantom Power on GH5s

Someone else could answer this with more technical precision and detail, but per my knowledge the mic plug-in power is a 5v power source equivalent to USB power, to allow powering of small mics like the Rode Video Mic Pro without need for a battery.

While it does supply power, 48v phantom power is a big step up and the 3.5mm jack does not support this.

DPreview got it wrong. Panasonic never put "phantom power" anywhere, they put mic plug-in power, and it looks this was misinterpreted and subsequently misprinted.

If you want phantom power, you will need something like the Panasonic XLR unit.

well, then what is the purpose of the "MIC (Plug-in Power) " option vs MIC ?

as said here for exemple https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-lumix-dc-gh5s-review

it is supposed to output phantom power

Thats a very long article to post for us to hunt for where it says that. I don't recall that article saying much about audio.

A XLE to 3.5mm jack is not the same thing as a proper adapter. A 3.5mm jack can provide power but thats for low power 3.5mm devices with a headset for a phone. No way a 3.5mm jack will ever provide true phantom power for an XLR mic. You need to buy the Panasonic audio adapter unit for the GH5/GH5s if you want to provide proper phantom power.

Some microphones (mostly LAV mics from my experience) require "Plug-in Power" to function. This is 5 volt low amperage power and NOT designed for XLR microphones requiring 12-48 volt phantom power.

To power an XLR microphone with your GH5 or GH5s camera you need to use the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 XLR microphone adapter that does provide 48 volt phantom power from the camera battery.

sorry, I know its a long article but I just did CMD+F on the page and search for "Phantom" and read the info quickly

Its disappointing...I really thought I could do without the XLR unit...

I have a small xlr/xlr mic Phantom power box, very small, that runs on a 9-volt battery. PM me if interested.
Cheers

That’s too bad, I also thought the gh5s offered phantom power.
An alternative if you want to stay light (without the xlr adapter) is to use a battery powered mic like the Sennheiser MKE600 and an xlr to 3.5 cable.

Have you considered a mic that has it's own provision for a battery? Slightly longer but less bulky overall. In my case, I use a very small 3 channel mixer that is VERY clean. The camera volume level is turn all the way down and the mixer does the work. Search eBay for a "Juiced Link" mixer. Costs less than a good mic.

Yep I know about the Juicy Link, but still too clunky for me.

At the end I bought the XLR adapter for GH5 and was surprised : it is quite small and light. Only regret is that if you put your mic on top of it the whole configuration starts getting real tall
