Audio on GH2

Hi guys.

I'm sort of on the fence about wether I buy one AF100 or two GH2s for my 2011 projects.

My question is. I have a Sennheiser shotgun mic and I am planning to get a Sound Devices field mixer.

Is it possible to feed the audio from the mixer directly into the GH2?

How's the audio quality?

I don't think GH2 has audio line-in recording feature. It has ext mic-in.

If you were using a Sound Devices 302, you could theoretically connect the main XLR outputs of the 302 into the 2.5mm mic input on the GH2. You would just need a cable that goes from dual XLR female to stereo 2.5mm (which would likely require adapters). You can adjust the main XLR outputs of the 302 to feed the GH2 a mic-level signal (as opposed to line-level).

The trouble is the tiny 2.5mm mic input on the GH2. You don't want to cause a lot of stress on this input. It's just too easy for a 2.5mm adapter to get tugged, and the next thing you know you lose the audio connection with the camera.

A better way to go would be to get a CX series XLR adapter from juicedLink. The owner of juicedLink can sell you a 3.5mm to 2.5mm output cable to go from the juicedLink's output to the mic input on the GH2. It would be a much better way to connect the Sound Devices 302 to the camera. Then you could also use the Tape Output on the 302 with the Sound Devices XL3 cable and connect that to the line-level input on a portable audio recorder like the Edirol R09HR. That way you could be recording the audio into the camera and be making a second copy in the portable recorder at all times.

If a mixer has line level outputs, use an inline audio attenuator (or pad) to reduce the line level signal to mic level. Attenuators/pads are available from most pro audio & video dealers.

And, yes the AJA KiPro & KiPro Mini have XLR inputs which embed external audio (mics, mixer) _in addition to_ audio from a camera or other HDMI source (if there is any). The KiPro's XLR inputs are one of its coolest features.

I will use myself an H4n for this duty. You have the benefit of internal recording + feeding the camera. Giving the flimsy GH2 mic connector and questionable sound quality, it's not a bad idea to record on a separate unit...

plus with the external recorders you will get uncompressed 24bit audio - does anyone know what the GH2 audio spec is? The HMC150 records a compressed audio format.

It may have come up before, but I just discovered this 3.5mm line-level to 2.5mm mic-level pad cable for connecting the headphone output of a portable digital recorder to the mic input on the GH1 and GH2:

Yes, this looks like a good solution to avoid the weight of xlr cables. But if you're careful you can use xlr and get an attenuator like the one I use -- Hosa ATT-448. It works from a mixer into a Zoom H2 and into a mic input on camera. It is adjustable too, from -20db, -30db, or -40db. Very handy that the pad can be adjusted.
