Audio Meters and VFR mode

Just a bit of a warning about VFR mode, the audio meters as well as audio out the headphone jack continue to function when in Variable Frame Rate mode, even while recording, but no audio will be recorded. This happens even if you are set to 24 fps!

As near as i can tell the audio meters and headphones are always active, but the only way to record audio is to set VFR to off. I could see this catching some folks, you are rolling 24fps, audio meters are bouncing, you hear good audio on the headphones. but when you stop rolling and play the shot back, no audio.

That's something Panasonic should fix with a firmware update. Otherwise it surely will ruin some shots for people.

This happened to me today. Thank God I was rolling an Edirol for the second cam 5D on the shoot. We had been teaching a DP how to overcrank and he left it in VFR On. Not happy about this 'feature' at all--no audio meters should move, this is going to sting a LOT of people--but OMG is the shot gorgeous with a Canon L Series 24-70mm lens. This camera is amazing!

That must be fixed please because that would "bite" me!.

I frequently shoot off-rate as well as Synch on the same shoot day . Often alternating.

Guess what. I was well aware of this issue, and it still caught me today. Last shot before lunch was at 60FPS VFR. Went to lunch. Came back to do an interview, started rolling, 3 minutes in to the interview i noticed the timecode ticking off rather quickly, DOH!!!!! Glad i caught it then and not at the end of the interview.

I almost got caught out by this two days ago. We just got done doing some slo-mo, and had moved to doing a two person presentation. The two people were practicing their lines when I remember the gotcha. Ran over the camera that was being ran by someone else, set it, shot a short clip and played it back to make sure it had audio. Whew.
