Audio Issues

I bought my DVX used off of eBay with the Mack camera warranty. The description said that it had been used for a production company in L.A. So far so good, aside from some head cleaning required everything has worked like it should. I've had it for about 3 and a half months now.

After I got it I remember plugging in my external mic into one of the audio inputs to test it out. I listened to the audio with headphones and seem to recall it working correctly but I may be mistaken. Perhaps I was hearing the on camera mic and thought it was the external mic.

The reason I think this might be is because I've just tried plugging in my external mic again and can not get it to work. Both XLR inputs seem to be completely dead, no matter how I fiddle around with the settings. My question is, is this the case and, if it is, what could have caused it?

If they are indeed broken I'd like to send it in for a repair seeing as the XLR input is one of the features that made me spring for the DVX in the first place. The Mack warranty expires at the end of april, but I've heard that the turn around time for them is very long. Anyone have any experience with this?

It's doubtful that both inputs are "dead". Are you sure your mic is working correctly? Did you try some other audio device?

Are you sure the settings in the camera are correct? Do you have the inputs set for line level when you actually need mic level? Are you seeing any kind of deflection on the VU meters when you "fiddle" around.

I might first try another audio source.

Good Luck,

Well, my understanding is that you plug the mic into the second input and set both the Ch 1 and Ch 2 selects on "input 2". The mic needs phantom power so I turned that on for ch 2.

As for your suggestion about my mic, I orginally thought that maybe my XLR cable had gone, but I plugged it into my USB recording interface and it worked fine.

Thanks for your suggestions though. I really can't think of anything else except the mic inputs being blown. Is there some sort of menu setting that could cause this?

Thanks again.

Boy do I feel stupid. I just realized there are "line" and "mic" switches on the front of the camera. I didn't even remember those were there.

Well, they were both set to line. Switched them to mic and now everything works fine. I would feel bad about it but I'm too relieved.

Anyways, thanks again Tim.
