Audio, inside car shots..

ME66 vs MkH-416.

I've gotta rent one of these mics, does anyone know what would be better for car interiors? Its basic to camera, most likely on camera microphone.

Thanks,.

The 416 is the better mic of the two, but a condensor cardoid might work better than a shotgun. Shotguns sound tubey compared to a std cardiod, but then again, it also depends upon mic placement. BG noise, and a host of other factors.

I would suggest ADR is the best way for getting the best mix between dialoge and BG noise and foley stems, but that's alot of work so it just depends upon your project. If it's a serious narrative then a full out audio ADR might be the solution. Small projects can use production sound with cleaning/sweetening and all these Reality productions just need down & dirty miking.

Its a very small project. Yeah, I'm gonna try getting the 416, since it is the better mic, and it should overall give me better sound. - Thanks

I have not worked with the 416 and am not familiar with it, however I have extensive experience with the me66. It has never failed me in any situation. The audio is pristine and responsive. On everything from movies, to documentaries to network televsion news and entertainment programming the me66 has performed extremely well for me.

I've found Lav Mics work great if you position them in key places inside the car, works better than a shotgun or cardiod IMO, and I've shot with all 3 and I prefer Lav.

We used both ME66 and lavs for multiple interior car shots in a recent movie. Strategically placed lavs provided better sound but the ME66 was usually acceptable although bass-heavy and a little tubby at times in the closed environment of a car.

For me the mic choice wasn't as critical as trying to cut between multiple angles with different background noises, etc. Road noise is very difficult to manage and I agree with 10s that ADR is really the way to go. I'm sure many of the "lite" versions of DAW software can do it; I know Cubase LE can.

Trust me, you'll be much happier with the results if you ADR these lines.
