Audio Geek moment

Sound Ninja
I was watching Covert affairs S02E07, and one character is using a Sound Devices mixer to record to a Nagra SN.

Geeky but fun.

When I first saw "Contact" (yes, I watched that movie... don't judge), I got a kick out of the fact that the lab was outfitted with TASCAM DA-88s.

On another board, there was a raging discussion about how often movies and tv commercials that want to show "science/laboratory technology" use high-end audio gear. Something about lights, leds, vu meters, and lots of knobs in a shiny metallic case...

Saw the same thing in Covert Affairs, but did you see the 788t (think that is what it was) in White Collar a few weeks back. It was on the table as they were 'listening' to a phone conversation for a hostage-type negotiation.

I saw that, and I geeked out a little. But it also made me wonder, did they steal it off the sound cart or rent a couple for that purpose?

My 'geekness' comes out for computer systems, personal or mainframe, and these days, typewriters. About the only 'audio' equipment that sort of sticks in my mind is Coppola's 'RR from the "Godfather" series' film "The Conversation"(1974), which features reel-to-reel tape play...

Not audio, but I remember there was a map in the old PC game Tom Clancy's Rogue Spear that dealt with a hostage crisis at a TV station, and the control room had a low-res picture of the Panasonic WJ-MX50 video mixer plastered all over it... :)

Funny thing I noticed on I think "white collar" was that they had a "high end" brand intellabeam lighting controller in their surveillance van and pretending it was a recording device...

I've been dealing with gear for so long I can usually name 4 or 5 things I see in about 15 frames of behind the scenes footage. My wife isn't as impressed with that as I think she should be.

Well that Nagra they probably pulled from a museum. A friend who worked on The Black Stallion and had a bunch of SN recordings was looking high and low for one to transfer the tapes. They are not easy to come by. It just cracks me up that a "high tech" guy would be using a 1/8" RtR that you can't even get tape for anymore and was out of production probably before he was born. But you can't "rock and roll" a flash recorder. And how sexy is that little recorder!

I do have an old Nagra mono 1/4" RtR sitting in an anvil case. Nice to look at but I haven't fired it up in? A director gave it to me because he was moving across the country and it wasn't worth the freight. I on the other hand did haul it across the country!
